The gaming shelf rides into the haunted west with Dread Revolver

The news keeps coming in tabletop gaming! In anticipation of Internationale Spieltage – otherwise known as SPIEL – games will be announced left and right as publishers head to the demo in Germany next week. There’s always a lot going on in the hobby, and this week we’ve got some great mecha games, indie duets, and even a glimpse into the process of a talented and emerging young designer.

Featured Designer: Kay W.

Asked about their game design process for dread revolver, Kay W. told Gizmodo via DMs that this game was made while “consuming a lot of media that you know the bad ending is coming to. I love everything – revenge thrillers, Arthurian quests, noir, westerns.” She wanted to create a game where the players were “at odds with themselves and even with each other about that ending. Reaching the end of your path means you’re dead, and it also means that someone else might not be able to fulfill their quest.

For the players in dread revolver, “the question is almost always ‘how far are you willing to go for it?’ and if the answer is ‘as far as I can’, what does that really mean to everyone else?” It’s about balancing the party with the individual in a very clear conflict of interest.

Kay describes herself as “a game designer who works on a lot of things about ghosts, but mostly spends time hoarding yarn,” and also spoke in more general terms about their game design process. “All of me [work] is about exploring strange and hostile spaces with as much empathy as possible, even if it gets a little gory. In addition to dread revolverKay has also written indie games such as spirritation buster (a solo game of exorcism and negotiation) and Planetary loopwhich is about traveling to the center of the universe in an attempt to avoid an inevitable end.

For the hand of her wife is inspired by an event in the life of bisexual icon Julie D’Aubigny, a 17th-century fencing master and opera singer. When her lover’s family discovered the relationship, they put Julie’s friend in a convent against her will. Julie launched a rescue mission, pretending to enter the order, creating a distraction by setting the monastery on fire and freeing her partner.”
