A group of major online gambling operators have joined to agree on the first industry-led responsible gaming standards to better protect players from related harm in the US.
The partnership includes Bally’s Corporation, BetMGM, DraftKings, Entain, FanDuel Group and MGM Resorts International, with the new, 12-point pledge recommended as the principles for an industry benchmark.
These principles are derived from four core characteristics: operating only within legal markets that offer consumer protection; promote a responsible gaming culture throughout the company; ensuring that all online gaming is fun and enjoyed as a form of entertainment; and to understand that some players need additional resources and support for their gaming activities.
The 12 principles are based on these four characteristics and have been agreed upon by operators participating in the initiative, including taking measures to prevent minors and individuals from being excluded from gambling, and helping players make informed choices about gamble.
Operators will also support the adoption and promotion of a unified nationwide toll-free responsible gambling helpline and adherence to applicable socially responsible advertising standards.
Other commitments include providing players with tools to play responsibly; adhere to all self-exclusion rules and regulations; encourage customers to set budgets; promoting the value of time and financial limits; and providing responsible gambling training to staff.
Operators in the scheme have also committed to a shared responsibility approach to tackling problem gaming, including working with policymakers, academic experts and researchers, problem gaming treatment organizations and advocacy groups to promote and address responsible gambling with problem gambling.
In addition, operators will support funding for problem and responsible gambling research, and ensure that their respective responsible gaming programs and initiatives are reviewed and updated as necessary.
