Earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale hits Mexico’s Pacific coast
At least two people have been killed in a severe earthquake off the coast of the state of Michoacán in Mexico.
The earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, stalled on the very same day two previous earthquakes caused massive damage and killed hundreds or thousands of people in 1985 and 2017.
One of the victims died Monday after she was crushed by the facade of a department store in the Pacific port of Manzanillo, while another was found dead in a shopping center.
The quake passed without that level of tragedy, despite heightened nerves from a nationwide annual earthquake drill that happened less than an hour earlier.
The tsunami warning, issued immediately after the quake, was revised later in the day.
Authorities said the tsunami threat is “largely over,” with small sea swings of up to 0.3 meters above and below normal tides to persist for the next few hours.

Another creepy coincidence
This earthquake occurred less than an hour after Mexico’s annual nationwide earthquake drill, introduced in 1985 after the devastating Mexico City earthquake.
Across the country, about 14,000 loudspeakers issued a false warning to test people’s reactions, with millions of citizens evacuating their homes, schools and workplaces.

Nothing special about September 19, experts say
The fact that Mexico was hit by three different earthquakes on September 19, according to seismologists, is nothing more than a coincidence.
“This is a coincidence,” Paul Earle of the US Geological Survey (USGS) told The Associated Press. “There is no physical reason or statistical bias for earthquakes in any given month in Mexico…
“We knew we would get this question as soon as it happened. Sometimes there are just coincidences.”
José Luis Mateos, a physicist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), said: AS Mexico that the probability of three earthquakes on the same day in the same country is 1 in 133,225.
On a global scale, the USGS says there is no specific season for earthquakes and no such thing as “earthquake weather,” although one study specifically found a link between earthquakes and the monsoon season in Taiwan.
